Thief IV-logo

Happy ChristmakwanzaHanukahmas! With that awkward holiday greeting out of the way, How about some news? this week, we’ve got theft and bankruptcy  We’ve got Augmented Cosplay and Themed Beers. We’ve even got the Sale to End all sales, accompanied by depressed zombies. Ready? Then lets get started!

“I’m getting a Wii U for Xmas! BUT YOU’RE NOT!”

The WiiU is, understandably, getting a lot of attention form interested buyers. It’s the new big deal for this Christmas, and probably more than a few of you will be opening one from Santa this Tuesday.

However, some people could not wait.

At an airport in Washington last week, some thieves made off with more than 2 million dollars’ worth of Wii U units.  The reporting officers testimony just about says it all:

“I’ve been a cop for 28 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Sgt. Cindy West told ABC News. “This has come straight out of the movies.”

According to West, the bandits drove two diesel trucks into Nintendo’s distribution bay at Seattle Air Cargo. Once inside, the thieves lifted the Wii U units with forklifts onto 53-foot semi trailers waiting outside. This took place during a storm.”

I’m not going to say anything in support of theft, but I do admire this kind of ballsy brute force approach to acquiring gaming consoles…

Dean Hall’s Outlook: A bleak as your chances of survival

War Z affects Day Z

Perhaps one of the biggest gaming stories of the week was the release and shortly after removal of the War Z on Steam. The controversy centers on not only the games dubious cash shop, offering survival gear in a survival game (thus eliminating much of the challenge of survival for those willing to pay), but the downright false claims made in the Steam Store on what the game includes.

Well, the War Z may be finished, but its affecting other Z’s. Day Z creator Dean hall made this statement on reddit.

I’ve been pretty depressed about the whole situation. From a personal standpoint, this whole “saga” of the development made me seriously question if I wanted to be involved in the industry and I gave serious thought to cutting my losses and not being involved in the project.

At my Army Discharge medical this week, they noted I now have high blood pressure. Some things in life just aren’t worth worrying about.

I’ve been getting hammered by a massive amount with requests for information about DayZ release, interviews and my reactions to this and stuff and such – but for my own sanity I retreated and have kept to myself. Right now I’m just at home doing bits and pieces on the DayZ development. The rest of the DayZ team is doing the same.

I realize that I went back on my word about releasing an update, but went back into my shell for a bit last week, and I’ll come out when the dust is all settled.

The War Z was a bad rip-off of a great concept that is Day Z. Hall deserve the support of any zombie-loving PC gamer, and I know I’ll be buying the standalone when it is available.

steam sale

This is how I feel right now….

Bye Bye Money

That’s right boys and girls, it’s Steam Holiday Sale Time! In case you have been living in a country without internet  under a rock, or under pain of death should you engage in any massive sales, consider this a reminder that you can now save a metric shit-ton of money by participating in the Steam Sale.

So far, I’ve done pretty good. I picked up Psychonauts and Mirrors Edge to round out my collection (played them both before. Highly recommend them both). Ace of Spades has proved to be a fun diversion, though it still doesn’t hold a block to Minecraft. The real winner has certainly been The Walking Dead, to which I will be returning as soon as this weekly news update is posted.

The best deal certainly has to be the THQ bundle however, giving you 150 dollars worth of games for only $25. That’s incredible! Speaking of THQ (and explaining this massive savings)….

Bad Times for THQ

Bad Times for THQ

THQ has a Rough Week, Ubisoft Grins…

These savings are not a good thing.

THQ filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week. It seems even the power of the Humble Bundle, which rose their stock prices nearly 40% wasn’t enough to the company, who had suffered badly this year after the failures of Star Wars: The Old Republic and Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

However, it seems that the many projects they were working on might not fall into the dark dank place that is post-bankruptcy developer hell.  Ubisoft has expressed some interest in acquiring some of what THQ is selling. The Escapists’ Andy Chalk detailed some of what is going on by saying that “Ubisoft is apparently holding out for a fire sale and may wait until THQ is forced to break up and sell off individual assets. The stalking horse bid would seem to preclude that possibility, however, unless Ubisoft is expecting to acquire the assets from Clearview Capital, which I would think would mean substantially higher prices per property since, unlike THQ, it could afford to sit on them until it got the price it wanted.”

Here’s hoping THQ can get back on its feet and bring us more hilarity in Saint’s Row 4.

Sunglasses Inside: Non functional but entirely badass!

I’m a big fan of the Deus Ex mythology: Corporate Future, Bleak Dystopian overtones, Robot arms and such. What’s not to love right? Indeed, Human Revolution remains one of the best titles I’ve ever owned for Xbox, and saving Malak remains one of the most emotional moments I’ve ever experienced in a video game (I erased save files and spent 6 hours saving that women. I WAS NOT GOING TO LET HER DIE, DAMMIT!)

So, I imagine you can picture my elation when I watched this little bit of concentrated badass.

No other significant details and DCode films hasn’t yet given any release dates. However, this looks mighty good, and I am excited to see the final product!

Drinking: Approved by Tyrion and Bronn

Have a Pint with Ned and Drogo…

You know what I love almost as much as Deus Ex and intense cosplay? Game of Thrones. That show tie in fact with beer as one of my favorite things in all the land. Lucky for me, I can finally combine these two loves in one wonderful moment…

Brewery Ommengang has entered into a contract with HBO to produce a line of Westerossian brews.  Yes you read that correctly. Your GoT drinking game can now be conducted with GoT beer.

Ommengang’s first Game of Thrones beer, the aptly-named “Iron Throne Blonde Ale”, should hit stores for Season 3’s launch by March 31st, 2013. The ale will be available on draft, the more authentic choice to be sure, but 750ml bottles can also be purchased at the recommended price of $8.50. Three other beers are planned to follow, with one debuting in Fall, and the others during later seasons.

I know what all be drinking for the premier!
